The check engine light came on on about two weeks ago. I scanned it and got 0341 and 0342, which both seem to be for the cam position sensor. I could not find much information on how to test it, so I just replaced it as it was around $10.00. I replaced it and the light stayed on. I cleared it and drove it around a few times but it kept coming back on. I disconnected the sensor and put some dielectric grease in it, which did not help. After clearing it, it would almost always come on as soon as the car started or just as I started moving. It runs fine and all the wires seem good, are there any tests I can do? Is it possible its the ECM? It is hard to find info on these, so anything is helpful.

The majority of problems associated with these fault codes are caused by wiring problems. Look for a wire rubbed through and grounding to the engine or body, spread terminals in a connector, corroded terminals, or one that's backed out of the connector body.

The engine will run in back-up mode when the camshaft position sensor's signal is lost. A record of the event will be stored in the Engine Computer. Your mechanic will use a scanner to replay that data to see what was happening.

Do not forget to also check your timing belt to make sure it did not jump a tooth or two. Do not forget to check oil level also. Low oil pressure can set timing codes if you have variable timing.

Remove valve cover and check for sludge also. If full of sludge then you have bigger problems.
