A/C Clutch lockup

I have a 95 STS with 34,584 miles. I am having a problem with the A/C. The pulley locks up and will not spin thereby smoking the belt. I have had it at the shop twice and they can not find the problem. After reading much on the net is it possible for the bearing to lockup when it gets hot? When the pulley locks up, turning the ac off or on does not make any difference. If I let the car cool off it will work fine for a while. On a road trip I ran for two hours before I smelled rubber burning and pulled off the road. The clutch and pulley were hot. I had some bottled water that I pored on the pulley and waited 30 minutes and I would spin again. My shop keeps trying to sell me a new compressor when I know it works fine.

Sounds as if your compressor is either seized or partualy seized. If you can get your hand on the compressor clutch and are unable to turn it clockwise this will mean that the internal parts have locked up and you will need a new comprssor. By switching on the a/c the electro magnet will lock in the clucth to the compressor, and if your compressor is seized this will lock the pulley and the drive belt which will slip over the locked pulley burning the drive belt until it breaks. Hope this helps
