If you smell it in the car, I need you to check around the fuel injectors. There are 0-rings that can leak and they are hard to detect. Also, has the check engine light come on? I ask because there could be a leak in the EVAP system which can cause a smell.

Finally, if you smell it in the garage, check the down pipe (filler tube) where you place gas from under the car. I have seen them rust and get pin holes in them. The fumes make it into the car at times.

Let me know what you find.

I pulled the top engine cover off and checked the injectors, no leaks. The check engine light is not on. The filler tube that I can see fromt the wheel well shows no sign of any leak.

I need you to try something. You need to perform a fuel pump pressure test. My concern is one of two things. Either the regulator is allowing too much pressure to build, or there is a leak.

Here is a how to for checking it:

https://www.2carpros.com/how_to/how_to_check_fuel_pressure.htm

I need you to pay attention to pressure drop off when the key is turned off. IF should maintain pressure for several minutes. If it doesn't, then we need to determine where the leak is coming from, before or after the fuel rail. I will explain that as needed.

I found my problem last night. The gas smell was coming from a leaking injector o-ring. I had looked at them before, I guess it got worse.
Thanks for the help.

Hey Joe

I have the same problem on my 2002 STS except the problem is very noticeable after filling up with gas and then goes away as I use the gas. Any suggestions?
