Electrical problem
2004 Cadillac Escalade Esv V8 Four Wheel Drive 94000 miles

My navigation system buttons have been gradually losing the ability to cause an action for the past year. At first it was infrequent, having to push a button two or three times to make something happen. Now, it does not work 95% of the time but kicks in on occasion. When not working, all the buttons do not work including the wheel but I can still see whatever was last on the display. The display is fine and the processor/information etc is all fine. When not working, I can still access some controls like the the source/channel using the steering wheel buttons. I suspect some small contact that has become positional as the solder connection broke but is nearly still attached. The dealer wants $1,400 for a replacement and no small shop will touch it. I am convinced that if I could just get access, I could find the offending contact, re-solder it and avoid the charge for a vehicle that has lost much of its value. Where can I get detailed instructions about how to take the dash apart and is this a reasonable project for an excellent handyman but not much of a car buff (although I did used to routinely take apart and successfully put together my '71 Nova through to its death in 1989). Thanks

There are no moving parts inside your navigation module ie relays, switches etc. It is totally solid state. It sounds like you may just need a keypad. I would check around for an electronic service and repair center or a rebuilder in your area who might be able to help you. Plus, there is always the internet.
