1992 Eldorado 4.9 overheats after 10 to 20 miles. NEW- thermostat, fluid, radiator cap. It cools back down in a while 3 to 10 minutes and sometimes. I see the water circulating in the radiator but not as much as I think it should. No evidence of water in the radiator. I did notice the fans come on about 227 degrees which also seems to be to long. I heard they were 2 speed fans but really to look to see if they even would come on. I don't believe they were high speed but don't know what it would sound like. I also don't notice any leaks off hand but am going to really check. What else could it be?

Hi there,

I would start with having the radiator removed, cleaned & flow tested.

Hi, My 92 did the same thing until I found I had a small leak at the water pump. While running and under pressure it would push out fluid, turn off the car, pressure goes down no leak. But as the fluid would go down it would form an air pocket at the thermostat until it it got so hot the thermostat would open. Top off the over flow bottle and it would be fine for awhile. Till the water pump went completely. Hope this helps.

Yes the 4.5 and 4.9 L engine is vary hard to get to take coolant, it could also be bad headgaskets, sometimes they blow the radiator. Did you replace the whole rad or just the tank that was bad?
