My car is 10yrs old and I love it. Caddy dealer says strange noise is caused by ball bearings in front end going bad.
Wants $1100. Local mechanic wants 886.
Car's resale between 4875 and 7275.
Should I put cost of repair into car?
Are quotes in the ball park?
Is there some way I can avoid expense?
How long can I continue driving safely without repair--wear is at beginning stage?

Hi I had the same problem, and it is an easy inexpensive fix. Google Ball Berings online, I got it over the internet for around $80.00 and had my mechanic install it for another $80.00.

The price for the repair is in the ballpark. The component is a complete hub and bearing, including the ABS wheel speed sensor. There is no way to avoid it, if it is making noise it will eventually get worse. If it is at early stages, you have got some time. Personally, I have never seen one fail to the point of jeopardizing safety.
