I just purchased a 1999 cadillac deville. Its a great car. The gauge package is digital, and the fuel gage doesn't work. How do I know, well, it says "full" and I ran out of gas today. It didn't come with a warranty, so I can go back to where I bought it.

Is there an easy fix to this? Is there a sensor or fuse that is related to the fuel gauge? All the other gauges seem to work except the fuel gauge. Got any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks

Hello,

It sounds like the issue is the fuel level sending unit.
The fuel level sender is mounted on the fuel pump assembly. It consists of a float and a resistor panel. With the fuel level the float will go up or down and contact different part of the resistor. That gets translated into the fuel level at the gauge.
Malfunctioning level sender can show that the fuel is full when it is not or vice versa.

In order to replace that sensor you will have to remove the fuel tank and take out the fuel pump.

I have attached diagrams for your reference.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you.
