What is the recommended temperature for the coolant in a 97 Cadillac Sedan deVille D'Elegance with a V8 Northstar engine? If the thermostat needs to be replaced, where the heck is the darn thing?

There is no recommended temperature. It would have high cooling fans at around 224 deg and indicate overheat. The thermostat is on the water pump cover, where the lower radiator hose meets the engine. If you are having an overheat, I would have the block tested for combustion gases in the cooling system. Being a 97, there is a high probability of internal leaks.
