If there was no drl in my car the headlights would not come on automaticly when the ignition is in the on position, which is the case. Could it possibly be the headlight sentinel?

Yes, it is twilight sentinel. Your headlights should come on automatically in low light conditions, and the potentiometer adjusts how long they stay on after key off.
