I have an '86 Cadillac DeVille 4.1 V8, Auto trans. 160,000 miles. Car has been well taken care f and runs and drives well, other than it idles rough in gear when hot, which I believe may be a result of an over due tune-up. My problem started when I attempted to pass another vehicle. Car seemed to over-rev, with little passing power. Now, every time the car shifts from 1st to 2nd gear, it shift VERY hard. If I time it right, and let off the gas a bit at the shift point, let it shift, then re-accelerate, I can sometimes eliminate the hard shift. All other gears shift fine. Any ideas?

The over-rev could have been indicative of some slipping. What kind of condition is the fluid in, and is the level adequate. Shift feel is usually controlled by internal accumulators in the transmission, it could have a broken spring, or some scoring in the bore causing the harsh shift. With the miles you have on the vehicle, maintenance could have been a factor, and internal repairs may be necessary.
