My Buick has an intermittent problem I cant figure out. Sometimes it will not start, the engine will turn over but thats it. Other times the engine will rev on its own, when its not trying to die. The rpms will jump up to 2000 when I put it in drive, then drop to 900 when I shift into park. I have changed the fuel filter, the Throttle position sensor, the air filter, the spark plugs and wires. The ignition coils test within tolerance. I'm thinking there might be a problem with the transmission, but other than that I am lost. Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

When the problem occurs, if it cranks good, but won't start, Have a helper crank it, while you visually check for spark at the plugs. If you have spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure. Also, check for any applicable trouble codes. You should be able to check for mil codes.
