This poor vehicle. It's at 130,000 miles, and am having starting problems. And have a loud rattling noise coming from the engine (loudest when it is in reverse). I had a friend check it out who said it might be the air conditioner compressor, or the water pump. After a week, nothing has leaked, and am hoping it is the compressor. But someone recommended it should just be removed and just have a smaller serpentine belt put in. It seems like an awful lot of work. Any suggestions?

You can pinpoint the source of the noise with a stethescope. Or take a long extension or screwdriver and hold it against your ear to let the sound telegraph to you. Then you should be able to pinpoint the source.

*** ! Be very careful when doing this! Don't have any loose articles of clothing or anything that can get pulled into the belt! Safety first! *****

the catalytic converter is also a common source of rattling noises.
