How can you know (before investing an arm & a leg) whether you need a transmission filter or a transmission pump or a new transmission altogether.
My car will go 25 feet and slip out of gear. When I turn it off and back on, it will go another 25 feet. It now sits in my driveway. I don't know which route I should take. Repair, replace or buy a new car.

First, you need to make sure the fluid level is full. Check it with the engine running, transmission warm, in park on a level surface. If it's full, you most likley need an overhaul. As for a bad filter, if it's so dirty that it plugged up, the damage to the transmission is already done. You have to remember that whatever is in that pan is or at one time was in the rest of the transmission.
