My 2000 Buick LeSabre has approximately 71,000 miles. Recently I have noticed a whirlling noise (similar to the sound a motor makes when raising an antenna. Don't have that type of antenna!) Coming form the rear passenger side. The whirling noise is followed by a thump sound. It seems to happen when the car is first started and occasionally when idling while at a stop light etc. It doesn't happen all the time and there are no indicator lights on the dash when it happens. Any ideas?

Two thoughts, do you have air suspension in the rear?

And second and more likely I am leaning towards the fuel pump.

Put a funnel in the filler neck and listen for it being amplified while someone else starts it.

This will throw the CEL on becsuse of no cap, but don't worry about it if it happens.
