1988 Buick Lesabre engine runs a little rough

When I step on the gas the car sputters but then runs fine my check engine light is on and has been on for several months

This can be caused by several things, vacuum leak, sensor. If the check engine light is on, take the car to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer for codes. Once the trouble code is identified, you will know where the problem is coming from. Also, most parts stores will do it for free, so there is no money out of pocket.
