I have a 1963 buick lesabre with 52k org. miles and the car starts great .. but out of the middle of no where it will start spitting and sputttering and stall out... ive been told the points are bad and was wondering how the set the points and what to set them too before i take it to a shop?

Have you ever done it?
You put the points on a high spot on the distributor lobe, gap to about 30, then start the car with a dwell meter attached. Set the dwell thru that slide up door on the side of the cap! I don't have the specs on that model. Parts store may be able to give them to you!
B.T.W. Nice ride!
