Engine Mechanical problem
1987 Buick Electra 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive 150, 00 miles

my 3.8 starts perfect when cold but after a few minutes of warming up it starts to act like it is chocking itself out then dies and blows black smoke out the exhaust. If you flutter the acelerator a little it will run breifly and back fire out the throttle body

Hi:
The black smoke indicates a rich fuel mixture. I would have the fuel pressure regulator checked. It may be allowing too much fuel to the engine.

I would check out your MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor, they dont always throw a code when they fail. Or are on their way out. If its not sending the right air flow information, it can run very ritch and stall when warm.

I was having this same issue and it slowly over time got worse, yet never showed a code for bad MAF, I replaced it and it ran great after.
