2004 Buick Century Engine overheating

It was -5 degree this morning. On my way to work, the engine gage went from normal to red-line in a matter of seconds. The temp light came on and the engine quit. I pulled over and let it sit for about ten minutes, then started it again and drove the rest of the way. It did not overheat again. The heater does not blow any warm air. Do I need to replace the thermostat? Or do you think it is something else? Help?

I would start with that. Also, make sure the coolant is protecting the engine to a much lower temp so it doesn't freeze? Also, make sure it is full.

Let me know if the t-stat is the problem. There are other things that could cause it.
