I have a 1997 buick century: car runs hot cooling fans stop working I replace the relay sensor for the cooling fan, the temperture gauge sways back and forth, car shut off when started, low coolant light comes on, car vibrates when I try to start it again I'm wondering if I need a thermostat or replace the radiator cap, the cooling fans only comes on with a/c on, but car continues to run hot and car have trouble picking up speed when driving

Yes, change thermostat(easy) and check engine coolant temperature sensor. I think your timing has been retarded because your coolant temperature sensor is giving false readings. Do you have an engine light on? If so, you can always go to autozone for a free computer check whenever you need one. Have it done and bring me the codes. Or let me know whatever the clerk tells you after he/she scans your computer.
