1989 Buick Century Car wont go over 5 mph

My car was running fine then all of sudden it started lugging out. When I would stop at the red light it would hardly run, it would chug along then all of a sudden it would pick up speed just fine then if I came to another stop it would do the same thing. It started backfiring and then it would not go over 5 mph. It would just chug along. I need help I havent even had it a month. I can't understand how it would start running so bad so quickly. I don't drive it hard or anything like that. So I haven't abused it. Please help.

First, make sure the catylatic converter isn't pluged. Also, listen for hissing or ratteling from it. Next, has the check engine light come on? You may also need to check fuel pump pressure. You could have a bad pump or clogged filter. Here is a how to:
