So, I just changed the front brake on my vehicle listed above (rear wheel drive). Anyways, I changed the rotor and the brakes but when I test drove it the pedal made a hissing noise, and there is a metal-on-metal scratching noise as it drives. I suppose it’s the brake pads making contact, but I’m not sure. Any help is deeply appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

A hissing sound is usually from the power brake booster. If you open the hood and locate the brake master cylinder, the booster is right behind it. Have a helper pump the brakes and see if you can tell where the sound is coming from.

Next, if you hear a scratching noise, does it stop when you apply the brakes? Have you rechecked the brakes to make sure nothing has come apart?

The idea that you hear that type of noise leads me to first think one of the dust plates behind the rotor may have accidentally been bent and is touching the brake rotor, so check to see if that is what happened.

One other thought is this. Since this is a rear-wheel drive, that means you had to reinstall the wheel bearings in the new rotor hub. How was the bearing tightened? How tight did you make it? When tightening the spindle nut, it should be tightened to approximately 20 ft/lbs while you are turning the rotor. Once that is reached, it should be backed off 175 degrees, and then retightened to 17 inch-pounds.

Let me know if these things were done. Also, let me know if you are able to check the dust plates. The easiest way to do this is to lift one front wheel at a time and spin it to see if you can recreate the noise. That will help locate which wheel is the issue.

Take care and let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Joe
