With the engine off and key not in ignition, my brake lights sometimes turn on. They may go off again by themselves, or not. I can move the brake pedal by hand and that shuts them off. Obviously having them come on when I'm not around drains the battery. Is this caused by a faulty brake pedal switch issue or something else? Where should I start looking? Thanks.

Hi,

Is there excessive play in the brake pedal? If not, then I would recommend replacing the brake light switch. However, make sure the switch is tight and properly installed before replacing it.

Here are directions for replacement. The attached pic below correlates with the directions.

2. Lift locking tab, then disconnect electrical connector from switch.

3. Remove hairpin retainer, then slide stop light switch, pushrod, nylon washers and bushings away from pedal and remove the switch from vehicle.
4. Reverse procedure to install.

NOTE: Ensure stop light switch wires are of sufficient length to allow full travel of the brake pedal.

Thanks, Joe. I don't believe there is excessive play in the pedal. I suspect the return spring in the switch may be at fault and your suggestion to replace the switch seems to make the most sense. Thanks again.
