I have a 2004 BMW X5 3.0 with 120,000 miles. It is burning about a quart of oil a month (every 1,800 miles or so) and I have noticed a burst of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust sometimes after it's been running fifteen or twenty minutes.

I have been told that either the valve guides or valve seats may need replacing. What would this cost in the Chicago suburban area? Hinsdale area.

Thanks for the answer!

Look at the pressure regulator It's job is to return oil to the crank case after it has condensed from the oil vapor. If it has failed, it will smoke. Check that before you have the head off mate.
