a warning that read "check gas cap" came on after I filled up. I checked the cap and it was on tight. Several days later the warning stopped coming on and the service engine soon light came on. When the diagnostic was put on the code was a faulty gas cap. So can I buy a new one or is there a way to fix this one?

It is likely the cap will require replacement, I have had to replace several of them over the years, especially when smog testing the cars. They do fail. Go to this site for the correct part number and pricing/availability: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref.do?part=16116767740&showus=1&showeur=&series=E53
