My 2001 BMW has intermittent problems with the tail lights. The warning light comes on, and the lights do not appear to work although the bulbs seem OK.

I understand there is a corrosion issue, but I would rather not keep up this maintenance for corrosion. The dealer said they could replace the tail light assemblies for $500+. Is it possible to replace these or repair these for less if I use a non-dealer?
