2001 BMW X5 shifting

X5 2001 4.4 L , I was driving all the sudden the battery light came on and strated shifting funny, later when i exit the frewway i t was only going on 2nd gear and on no 1s2t gear. any advise

Check the alternator. It may have quit working.
