Transmission problem
2001 BMW X5 Automatic 70000 miles

my x5 is having an intermittent fault with the gear change from 1st to 2nd (auto) mainly when you are going uphill when the vehicle is under pressure as such. Transfailsafe/limphome mode cuts in so I have to pull over switch the engine off wait a while then off I go again. Surely if this was a gearbox problem something would have blown up by now. This has been happening for several months now. The dealer says two faults show up on the computer/glow plugs and general transmission monitoring fault. Any ideas anybody please?Help.

Where in the world are you? If USA this sounds like a reprogramming issue for the EGS and there is a bulletin for the reflash.

Im in the uk with my x5 feeling very depressed about it at the moment. What is an egs? Do you think replacing the 2 output speed sensors in the gearbox may help? Thankyou for your reply by the way

Have you obtained a printout of the stored faults from the Electronic Gear Selection and/or the other systems in the power train? It would help to know them.
