While driving car stalled, would not start, had towed and battery replaced, drove home, car stalled again, will turn over but will not stay running, mechanic said it was the key (key no longer works to set alarm but locks doors) and that I need to replace the key? Does this sound right? The instrument cluster is fading also, could this have anything to do with it?

There is probably a hole or a crack in the boot from the air mass sensor to the throttle body, usually at the small "accordion" that branches off to the idle air control valve.
