BMW uses a rectangular air filter on their cars, unless it is an aftermarket type or you are referring to the oil filter. If it is an aftermarket type, just follow the manufacturers recommendations.

Dear Dr Hagerty mine is the circular and is situated on the right hand side of the eng compartment.
You must be a Scot with a name like Hagerty?

Irish, not Scotch. Thanks just the same. Please send the last 7 characters of the vehicle identification number, it will allow me to access the database and send the correct information.

I could tell you are not a Scot as you spelt it Scotch.
Scotch is brewed in Scotland and Ireland as you know. Regards.

The 316 with the N42 motor never made it to the US market. Loosen the clamp at the throttle body, then pull the vacuum hose from the intake boot and after the mount screws are removed, out it comes. And then you can service/replace the air filter/silencer.
