I bought a 1995 BMW 740iL with 20 inch wheels, the car was very cheap so am not complaining, when I go to crank it the engine only goes click, I put a six-foot breaker bar and crank but she is frozen solid, I can not turn it to the left nor the right, I pulled all the spark plugs got my boor scope out looked inside every cylinder and the cylinders, look perfect. Sparkplugs had no oil on them I cannot figure out why this engine is frozen solid. I think it's the timing change or starter flex plate but I'm not sure, if anyone's had this problem before I would appreciate any feedback or if anyone has a spare engine for this car

The problem could be most anything, a spun bearing or a transmission problem for that matter. I would take the time to find out what caused this issue b4 throwing $ at it. If the motor is frozen up, you may have to pull the motor and tranny as a unit, instead of leaving the tranny in the car, in order to separate the transmission from the motor. If it is the motor, repost and I have a known good motor source for you.

Thanks for the fast response, I will take your advice and go ahead and remove the engine and transmission, I do have a 97 750il protection package Level 5 that the transmission did lock up on me and I could not move forward or backward but the engine still ran, I know more about the 750 then the 740 I guess it's time to learn about 740 now, thanks again for your response and I will be in touch.

I was just wondering if you had any more thoughts on the issue, I have talked to some BMW technicians, they believe the flex plate came apart, or the timing chain tensor let go, what do you think? the BMW technicians said they have never seen a 740 seized up, I bought the car from the auction for $1800

it is the car on the left, my kids call it the James Bond BMW, you may not know, I am a single dad with four children under the age of 10 and I am very busy with them, but I've tried to do all I can do to help you guys, but I am constantly under heavy artillery fire from all angles, I am also an attorney, you have probably noticed it by my vernacular, I have about 160 clients that I am currently helping with their legal problems, I specialize in governmental abuse of power, which currently we are all suffering from, I have been all the way to the United States Supreme Court, and have successfully litigated, it is easy to change the laws of the land, but the laws of physics, which we are engaged in, repairing vehicles, That's a whole other issue, the laws that we are restrained, to can not be changed!! people have no idea what they are dealing with when it comes down to their vehicle, I appreciate your support it is hard to find people like you, sorry for the long message, but nobody on the site seems to be responding, except you.

The only way to tell for sure is to inspect the flex plate and the timing chain, I would not hesitate to pull the motor, just drop it out the bottom with the front subframe, probably want to get it out of the snow. $1800 for a car that dont run, can you say salvage title?
