The "SErvice Engine Soon" light came on. Service shop says the catalytic converter needs replacement. While I decide on that, is it safe to drive the car for short distances 5 - 10 miles?

Yes it would be safe to drive the car at the moment this does not pose a safety concern.

There is nothing paticularly you will notice to look out for. The catalytic convert is for emmissions and should be replaced sooner then later considering you may have an emmissions test. Not replacing the convert may result in a slugish car, bucking, or misfiring as it may get clogged up or start breaking up and cause drivability issues at worst.
