Hi I have a bmw 540i it starts but when it does it shakes real bad and the rpm guage goes down to zero and the car shuts off it was running fine up to yesterday, could it just be bad gas

The problem is that your car is not a 1997 540i unless it is a v8, rear wheel drive.
