Engine Performance problem
1998 BMW 528 Two Wheel Drive Manual

This does not happen often but happens when the outside temperature is above 30 degrees celsius. The car drives fine so long as the speed is constant but when I reduce speed the car jerks for a kilometre or so and then stops, NO power! The car is still on but the revs will not go up when pressing the accellerator and then switches off. It seems as if there is no fuel going through to the engine. I will leave the car off for 15-20 minutes and restart and the car will be fine again. Once it stopped again but restarted and was fine after I had switched the car off for 1 hour.

BMW do not know what the problem is as they cannot replicate this problem and it does not show anything on the computer. "If it does not show on the computer it does not exist". Tell me that when I am stuck in traffic.

I have replaced the fuel pump twice, replaced the filters as well as the filter in the fuel tank and this has just happened again. In total, this problem has happened about 8 times but months apart.

When this happens, why did you wait for fifteen minutes? Couldn't you have just cycled the key off and on and restarted it right there?

Thanks for the reply.

I did try to switch the car on a few times. The car starts but does not move and switches off. When the accellerator is pressed the revs do not go up but stay at about 1000rpm and then switches off as if there is no fuel.

When the car is then off for about 15 minutes it then starts and moves off. I guess something is cooling off. The temperature of the engine is fine and there is sufficient fuel, at least half a tank.

Scanning the car with the proprietary BMW software is the next thing to do.
