Engine Performance problem
1984 BMW 528 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 275K miles

My BMW 528e (1984) starts on the first turn of the key but idles, warms up, and runs roughly. It backfires in neutral and backfires and runs terribly on the open road. I just replaced the MAF and the fuel regulator. It's a terrific car but I can't pinpoint the problem. I haven't changed out the plugs or coil but I do have a new fuel filter to put on it. I'm inclined to think it's not the filter but rather some other ignition problem. What does it sound like to you?

Thanks,
GSL

A close inspection of the cap and rotor is in order here. It will have a date stamp inside the cap and may be the problem. Also inspect the spark plugs and the spark plug wires, if aged like the cap and rotor, consider replacement.

Years ago I had an '85 325e that had similar issues. I replaced the timing belt. It's recommended every 60K miles or 5 years.
