2003 BMW 525 oil change and thiknes

I am using a full synthetic oil and I'd like to know How often should I make the oil change, every 5000 miles is fine?Some people said that this full synthetic oil come to last up to 10000 miles, is this correct?
I have noticed that at 3000 miles the service engine light comes on, why?
What type of oil should I use, 5w30 or 10w30? Thanks for your prompt help and accuracy.

PS: MY CAR IS A 525I, GERMANY VERSION.

I usually go 5000 on full synthetic. The service reminders are made into the car on the premise that people wont ignore them if they are part of the read-out. Should say on the filler cap what weight oil to use, stay with the factory reccomendation
