I am about to buy a 1995 BMW 525it wagon. The car's owner said his mechanic noticed a small leak from the headgasket. He said he would get it replaced before I bought it. He said that his mechanic quoted him 400 dollars for the fix. Does that figure(400 dollars) sound right. Thanks, Mike

No, the quote is too low. Replacement of the head gasket on that motor takes at least 12 hours, plus parts (gasket set, head bolts, and fluids)

Computer wait for the engine to reach operating temperature before take control of the emission systems and demand fuel efficiency and with out the thermostat the engine will not or may not reach the correct temp causing the system to run very rich which will case converter damage and other problem too
check fan operations and coolant system flow (water pump and radiator )
you can test the head gasket
ask your local part store if the have a head gasket test kit
