1997 BMW 328 stiffness in turning

I recently bought my son a 97 328i, I know tha bmw's have nice tight steering but this one feels alittle stiff, it also has seapage around the reservior. It has to be the pump or the rack how can I be sure what problem is, w/o buying everything, hoses etc. I can do most of my repairs but here in wisconsin its too cold to spend to much time in the garage.

My suggestion would be to address any substantial leaks. BMW cars do not over-boost the power assisted steering on the 3 series, you may be experiencing normal effort. It is not an American car, dont compare it to what Detroit produces.
