2003 BMW 325 Note sure if it is the transmission or engine

When I start my car the check engine light comes and the car sputters. I had a tune up and the car ran fine for a week or two. Now it is doing the same thing again. Also, when you drive it, it is slow to change gears and it is hesitate to go and the engine takes a while to idle.

Check the exhaust flow out the tail pipe, chances are the cataiytic converter is plugged. To test have somebody control the gas pedel while you put your hand in front of tail pipe, there should very good flow out of it at 2500 rpm, if not the cat is blocked.
