2002 BMW 325 100+ miles

I have a 2002 BMW352i in the shop. Early diagnosis is a problem with cylinder 4. A couple times over the past two weeks, there have been clouds of smoke from exhaust on the highway but ran fine. It happened again and is running terrible. If this is a head gasket problem of some sort, is there any kind of warning I should have gotten or seen? "Check engine light" or oil light warnings?

Has the car ever been overheated? If so you may have compromised the cylinder head casting itself. If the head is taken off, be sure to have it pressure tested before going further.

The car hasn't ever overheated. It has blown smoke a couple times but kept going without any hiccup whatsoever. The last time was different.
The "check engine" light has been on but the mechanic assured me a month or so ago it was something to do with emissions and need not be fixed at the time.
Also, the yellow "check oil" light has been on for a few seconds after starting the car but the oil has been fine. Even had mechanic check it.
Thanks.
