Noises problem
1989 BMW 325 6 cyl Manual

1989 BMW 325I has a high-pitched whinning sound coming from either the motor or transmission. It is most noticeable when I am driving on the freeway and in 5th gear. When I am at a stop, and the engine is running, I hear that same sound. I engage the clutch and the sound goes away. I was told by a mechanic, who claims to know-it-all, but isnt licensed, a.K.A. Backyard mechanic, said I need to replace the throw-out bearing. I have read my repair manual many times and I haven't found where it is located on my car. The closest I can come to, is a release bearing(clutch part). Please help because that noise irritates me and at times it sounds like its ready to blow up!

The noise you are hearing could very well be the transmission layshaft bearings. If the noise is in all the forward gears except fourth then it is very likely the bearings as I said and the least expensive solution is to replace the transmission as rebuilding could lead to trouble. Try calling (619)444-2290 Autobahn dismantling and talk to John or Sean, tell them Paul Hagerty sent you. If it were the throwout bearing it would be noisiest when you push the clutch in. Having said all this I should also say that noises can be extremely difficult to accurately diagnose from cyberspace and the opinion of a reputable and knowledgeable BMW technician should be sought out to allow them the opportunity to determine where the noise is coming from and what it causing it before just throwing parts at the car. Keep in touch and let us know how it goes.
