I think my fan clutch may be bad, causing overheating, how do I test, and are there any electrical issues that may cause overheating.

Thanks
Garry

When engine is cold the fan should turn but not easily-when hot should freewheel

If you suspect it replace it. They are dated units and have a finite lifespan. There are few electrical issues that would lead to overheating on a 1985 BMW
