Hi,

I have a UK registered 2000 318ti 1.9 140bhp with 105k on the clock. It has recently started losing all power and revs whilst driving. Twice it has completely broken down and i've had the cat replaced twice in the last two months as it has collapsed both times. When it loses power, it feels like the engine is being starved and i've heard a spitting noise from under the bonnet (?).

It is still losing power, despite the two cat changes, and is sounding and feeling sluggish with a constant whining when running above 40mph. Any ideas on what I can do to resolve this? The oxygen sensor has been suggested, i've changed the spark plugs and the ignition leads too.

I need you help!

thanks to anybody who replies,

Tim

Get the coolant temperature and oxygen sensor/s check or replace both of them. Its running in the open loop mode-O2 sensor is not adjusting fuel accordingly. Its in the rich side not switching. And dumping all that fuel causing the Cat to burned up.

Thanks for your advice. Car seems to be running better, although I still have a constant whining from the engine while driving over 40mph and the car still does not have the power it used to. Any other suggestions?

Cheers,

Tim

Might want to have the TPS/engine load sensor to include a fuel pressure check to find out what the pressure regulator and fuel pump doing. Maybe its not meeting its demand for fuel.
