When my 1997 318i has been ildling for a little while in neutral, there is a wheezing noise like a whistle, even when I press the clutch and shift gears in the nuetral position...When I am mobile and press the gas in any gear, the noise stop. As soon as I remove my foot off the accelerator when mobile, the noise began...help..help..its driving me nuts. I have checked for loose hoses ..etc...no luck

Hi there,

If the noise is constant with clutch operation the clutch release bearing may be faulty i feel that it will be this or the spigot bearing in the back of the flywheel, get a mechanic to listen and confirm this diagnosis.

It is possible that the noise is from the crankcase vent valve. p/n 11-15-7-501-587. It is on top of the intake manifold, a round black plastic thing. Try opening the oil filler cap when it is making the noise and if it stops or changes, you are getting close mate. ♥
