Hey guys,
I have a 1996 bmw 318ti with A/C issues. The A/C works, but when i turn it on it will occasionally sound like something is grinding. the car will hum / grind for a few seconds, then it will go away. this happens when going at slow speeds, but not on the highway.
Also, sometimes when the air is on and I'm driving, I'll notice powdery black residue blowing out with the air from my vents.
Got any ideas as to what my issue is?

The grinding could indicate a faulty compressor. The black powdery stuff could be dirt getting by the pollen filter.
