Having just bought this car I now find that the starter motor only turns when it feels like it but soon works if you tap it with a spanner. I would like to remove the old unit and refit another one but it looks really difficult to get at as it appears to be buried under the inlet manifold. What is the best approach to removal and refit of the starter and how? Is there more room for access from under the car?

Yes and you will need to be able to reach over the transmission as well, which is possible from under the car.
