My question is, did you guys bleed the brakes after doing the front brake pads? Or did you just do that pressure build by slowly pressing on the brakes and slowly letting it go? And does the brake fluid reservoir need to be open when you do that?

No need to bleed the brakes with replacing front pads, after pushing back the pistons and fitting the new pads, just pump the pedal until the pistons come back on the new pads and you have a firm pedal. Just take the master cylinder cap off to make sure that the fluid level is correct as it may be over full with the thicker new pads installed, correct the level and that is all you need to do.
