1996 Audi A6 Failed emissions echeck for engine light on

1996 Audi A6 6 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 140k miles

Just bought this car, runs fine, no problem. Just as I was pulling into Ohio echeck station for emissions inspection, the engine light came on. They said it passed catalytic converter, Pressure of gas cap, MIL engine off.

However, it failed on MIL Engine on, TR number 3, with 3 DTC codes:
P0301 Cylinder 1 misfire detected
P0302 Cylinder 2 misfire detected
P0300 Random/Multiple cylinder misfire detected.

What exactly does this mean, and how soon it needs to be fixed.

The codes indicates a misfiring in the cylinders concerned and it could be due to faulty spark plugs and related ignition components or the fuel injectors or fuel pressure.

You might feel the engine is running well, but it really is not at its peak. Getting it fixed as soon as possible is recommended though you can still drive it if it is not affecting the performance too much.
