1988 AMC Eagle wont start

Red wire to small post on solenoid that is hot when key is on gets hot at terminal onsolenoid and voltage drops way off at coil post when u try to start it it will have one good spark as u start to turn engine over and again just as u release key if u disconnect the dist at plug in u have full voltage not distributor

Ed, It sounds like the solenoid may be shorted internally. The red wire should only be hot while cranking. Dog
