My mother’s starter was not turning over, so my brother replaced her starter. Next day it would click continuously, but not turn over. He replaced her battery and cleaned the connections. She drove to work and then home. After turning it off, the doors would not lock and she had no lights or sounds when she turned the key.

How far or how long was the car driven? If the generator failed, with a new, fully-charged battery, you will get perhaps as much as an hour drive time with two engine starts if the head lights and heater fan are not used. Start by connecting a small battery charger and charging the battery for about two hours at a slow rate. If the engine cranks normally after that and starts, use an inexpensive digital voltmeter to measure the battery's voltage. You must find between 13.75 and 14.75 volts while the engine is running. If it stays near 12.6 volts, the charging system is not working.
