Only way it goes into drive if I turn the key half way and then put it into neutral and then turn on the car, it will allow me to move to selected gear but once I go back to park it won't move at all.

I had this same problem with a 1995 Ford Explorer. It turned out to be the wiring in the steering column. I had the harness replaced, and it has been fine since.

Your problem is likely one of two things, either the fuse that controls the actuator for the shifer release is blown or the brake pedal switch is bad. Do you have brake lights?
